Monday 12TH 5-7pm Street Fest! Enjoy a night out on Washington Street with Sodexho supplying dinner and refreshments. While the Res Life team had tones of outdoor games to be played and what’s a street fest without music and don’t forget that you can pick up some sweet sunglasses from the 80’s. Due to the weather the Street Fest was canceled this year but will surely be returning next year so come on out and enjoy the festivities.

Tuesday 13TH GLOWSTICK PAAARTTYY!

This was one of the best nights that I have had here at Upper Iowa University. The party started around 9 o’clock and it was jumpin jumpin. Soon enough the crowd grew like wild fire and everyone was asking… who let the dogs out who? who? The music was like living on a prayer and you didn’t wana stop till you got enough. They was ultimate Frisbee in the dark with glow Frisbees and people were making arm bracelets, necklaces, belts that could be used to hold up their pants, and I think I even saw a few people with glasses made out of glow sticks. When the party really got started they handed out cotton candy on sticks and the music picked up to doing the Cupid Shuffle. I tried doing the Cupid shuffle but ended up more like doing the casual walk away because no one wanted to do it with me!

Wednesday 14TH MATTRESS FIELD DAY!

This was another great event held by the Res Life squad and I was very impressed with the work put into it. This was a time for the students to come out side and hangout in Grace Meyer Square and let loose and soak up the rays from the sun. Along with working on my nice tan I was offered a rather refreshing smoothie and let me tell you that nothing could have felt better on this 80 degree day. Now it was not just the smoothie that made everything great but also the fun games that were going on, which included mattress surfing where people would try to see how long they could stay up until the fell hard onto the ground. When the men showed up to the event it was time to show off their muscles so they took turns seeing who could throw the mattresses the furthest. Some of the girls even got involved with the contest and tried to show up the men.

Thursday 14th Are You Smarter than a freshman!

This event is being held in the east cafeteria tomorrow night at 7:00pm and will consist of the same settings just like the TV show are you smarter than a 5th grader. Lucky contestants will be able to be contestants for the night and see if they are really smarter than college freshman. We will have a special guest contestant that will be unnamed but will be surely able to answer man of the questions so the contestants better be ready. Prizes will be given away and it will be a great event to come to because all you will need to do is sit back and relax. Who knows maybe you can even help out on a few questions.

Friday 16th Camp for Hunger!

To end off the week of festivities we are going to have a camp for hunger starting in the morning and going all the way through the night. People are allowed to stay in Grace Meyer Square in tents and this will help raise awareness for people who aren’t as fortunate as us. Come on out and help make a difference and enjoy the festivities that we will have to offer!!

I know this is coming a little late but welcome back from Spring break and I hope everyone had a safe and relaxing time off. I would like to share how my spring break went and it might not be as exciting as most of you but I promise you will enjoy it!

I headed home to Harmony, MN at 8:00 in morning March 6, 2010. My Tahoe was packed to the brim with everything I thought I would need to survive for a whole spring break and it included my 32in VIZIO Television, PS3 included with Call of Duty MODERN WARFARE 2, and we can’t forget NBA LIVE 10. Along with all the electronics I brought home with me I brought enough clothes to last me the rest of the year and then some. I finally realized that I should probably give some clothes to Good Will or pass them on to my younger cousins.

As I drove home you always got to have the I pod plugged in and blasting so that’s exactly what I did. A few of the songs I was listening to might sound familiar, they were What Ever You Like, All the Above, Day Light, Now Your Gone, Hard, Ditty, I’ll be in the Sky. When I finally made it home to god’s country I stopped into my family’s business and said hi before I went home to unpack all of my belongings. If you come from a small town it’s not that simple to stop into a business because everyone is going to ask why are you home, is it spring break, did u miss your parents, and then you have to answer no, no, no I am just home for a week because of spring break.

Then finally everyone leaves and you can give your mom the huge hug that she was waiting for and make it quick because you don’t ever want to have your friends see that you’re hugging your mom! Then it’s onto the dad and he is always the one that will give you the proud hand shake to have you home and it’s always a relief to say your home for spring break and not a reply like I dropped out or I was kicked out! When dad is happy and he doesn’t have any jobs for you then that’s the sign to hurry out to the car and go home to unpack and relax for a couple hours and that’s exactly what I did.

I drove out to my house in the country on top of mount Kingsley and did the same thing I use to do when I would come home from high school and that was see my cat Zeus. He is the type of cat that would remind you of Garfield because all he would do is lie in his bed and eat every day. When I was done being distracted by Zeus I finally made myself unpack all my stuff into the dining room. It was a struggle just to make it that far but when it was all in from my car I sat down and pigged out with a pizza, ho ho’s, three mountain dews and for desert was a chocolate push up.

Then it was time for me to take a nap and from eating all that food and the only way I could do that was to throw in the movie The Hangover. It didn’t take very long for me to go to sleep but I remember waking up at the very end when Alan had found the camera in the back seat. When I was fully awake I was ready to start my vacation the right way a d that was going up to Treasure Island Resort and Casino. It was my cousins 18th birthday so I decided my present to him would be taking him up there for the night. We arrived at Treasure Island around 5:30 and mad e a limit that we would be out of there around 8:45. We had to bring our cell phones in because Casinos do not supple clocks in the building.

The casino had grown over 5 times since the last time I was in there and we didn’t even know where to begin. Sure enough as we walked in we were carded and then they took a stamp and placed it on top of our hand. Now it was time to find our lucky spots which took about eight to nine minutes to find because it was Friday night and that’s when all the gamblers came to town. After a long walk around the casino we found some poker slot machines and decided to spend the night there. We had received a lot of money thanks to our parents so we decided whatever we lost or won we would keep between the two of us. We both started out with putting a 20 dollar bill in and seeing how long that would last both of us. Sure enough only half an hours or so had passed and we had already blown our first twenty.

It was too easy just to keep throwing more money into the machine and that’s exactly what we did for two more hours strait. We would be winning some and then lose some but it never really seemed to change how much fun we were having. Plus we also got complimentary drinks given to us whenever the lady would come around.

THEN SUDDENLY OUT OF NO WHERE I WON THE JACKPOT ON A ROYAL FLUSH OF HEARTS!!!!!!!!  THE MACHINE WENT OFF LIKE FIRE ALARMS AT A SCHOOL. THE LIGHTS ON THE MACHINE WERE FLASHING LIKE A LIGHTING SHOW DURING A HOT MAY STORM. I DIDN’T KNOW WHAT TO DO SO I JUST SAT THERE AND WAITED FOR SOMEONE TO COME AND GIVE ME THE MONEY. IT WAS $1,040.00 AND I STILL HAD OVER 300 DOLLARS IN THE CREDIT BOX. SURE ENOUGH A SECURITY MAN CAME OVER AND CONGRADULATED ME BUT FIRST HE HAD TO CARD ME AGAIN AS WELL. I DIDN’T CARE BECAUSE I WAS SO EXCITED AND AT ONE POINT I MIGHT HAVE EVEN STARTED CRYING!! AFTER ALL THAT HAD HAPPENED I WAS DONE FOR THE NIGHT AND GAVE SOME OF THE MONEY TO MY COUSIN BECAUSE HE DIDN’T WIN VERY MUCH SO I THOUGHT IT WOULD BE FUN FOR US TO BOTH GO HOME WITH MONEY!!

After that incredible night was over the rest of the spring break just seemed to keep on getting better and I was shopping all the time and finding things that I didn’t need but I really wanted. So I did what any kid who loves their cell phone and was dreaming of getting the newest one and I went out and bought it. The next afternoon I went to Verizon Wireless and bought myself a DROID and ever since I have been living pretty well. And that’s how my spring break started and it only kept getting better.

Hope you all have a great Easter break and see you Monday morning bright and early!

This is Finals week for everyone here at Upper Iowa University. All the people around the campus are spending their time studying, studying, and did I forget to mention studying. Now don't get me wrong its not a bad thing to spend your whole time studying for finals but that is a big part of college life. All friends you will meet throughout the week telling you their experience of studying for 10 hours straight or they werejust taking a break from a six hour study group session. Many finals take place on Thursday and Friday but every now and then you will come acorss some studets that are done with their finals and its only Wednesday!! The college helps all the students out with finals weekend with keeping the library open past midnight and letting any students that want a stress free massages. I have experienced one of the messages and i have to say that they were one of the best masages I have ever gotten. They are free and their office is located on the first floor in Garbee Hall. The massages are not only for humans but also can be for your pet dogs or close companions.

Another part of the finals week is the late night dinner held in the East Cafeteria! All the students go up to the East Cafeteria around 10:00pm and have all the scrambled eggs, ham, pop, pancakes, and other deliciousfood to eat. This gives everyone a nice break from all the hard studying and cramming that has been going on all week long. When the last final of the Spring Term one is over a lot of the students will scatter like wild fire across the state of Iowa to home. From there many students will spread across the United States for the next eight days. Many will go down South to Mexico, Cancun, Florida, Virgin Islands, or even the Bahamas. But for all you not to big into traveling might be going home for the break and just laying low. Either destination is a way for a great time to enjoy yourself and let yourself get pampered.

Here is where the best places of Spring Break 2010 will be located!!!!!!

  • Where ever you will be spending your Spring Break remember to have fun, be safe and take it all in because before you know it everything is back to normal and you will be sitting in your class room watching the clock move slowly.

The men's basketball team at Upper Iowa University boarded a bus at 11:00 am and headed out for Duluth, Minnesota. The trip needed to go one way and that was with a Victory! The team arrived in Duluth at 5:30 and had just enough time to check in to their rooms and then change into their practice gear andget ready for practice. We then boarded the bus again and traveled to the gym where practiced was held and then after practice was done we all went back to the hotel and got ready for supper! The night was great with everyone telling stories from the past basketball seasonsand everyone getting stuffed by all the great food that was prepared for us! To top things off the whole team got desert and it was almost more than anyonecould handle. But everyone found a way to finish their desert and then it was back onto the bus and time to go back and fall asleep on our full stomachs.

The next morning wake up call was at 7:45 am and to fallow was scouting report for half an hour and then the team was back on its way tothe gym for walk through for an hour. When walk through was over we all went back to the hotel to clean up and chill for a little bit before our pre game meal. The meal was great and it was a sweet experience because our meal was on top of the hotel we were staying at and it rotated so you could see a lot of Duluth and Lake Superior!!  Once everyone was done with their meal it was time to get ready to pack up and head to the gym and get ready for the game and cheer on the women's team.

The tip off was at 3:14pm and as we all expected it was a tough grind with the home team coming out to a fast start and it looked like they were going to put a stop to Upper Iowas fun trip and send the home with another Loss. When the horned sounded for halftime the home team was leadingby 5 points. The locker room was filled with energy and tons of emotions coming from all the players and coaches! When the second half started it was Peacocks ball and they knew what had to be done and that was to come out swinging and they connected right away. The Bulldogs tried to stay ahead but it was slipping threw their jaws and paws (Duluth Bulldogs). When the Peacock's took the lead with 16 minutes left in the game it sealed the deal because the home team could only foul and hope for the peacock's to miss their free throws. Peacocks made their free throws down the stretch but the Bulldogs would not go away that easily and kept putting up 3 pointers that somehow found a way into the basket but it was too late for any miracle come back and the horn soundedfor the last time. The PEACOCKS WON 77-70 and it was a great road trip up their but even a better one on the way home!!

The Peacock's will be in on the road this Wednesday nigtht in McCown Gymnasium which is home to the Winona State Warriorsand then they will play in Dorman Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon against Concordia.

On Thursday afternoon the Upper Iowa Men’s Basketball team will head out for the University of Augustana, SD which is Five hour trip from Fayette, IA. The last time these two teams met was on January 15thin Dorman Gymnasium. It was a great game to be a part of because it came down to the final shot. The PEACOCKS WON the game by a final score of 70-67 but the desperation shot that Augustana took was centimeters from going in. Once the horn sounded the crowd stormed the court and you could say that the atmosphere in Dorman was like a huge NCAA DI game that the underdogs upset a bigger team. With the huge win over Augustana it was the first time in the Peacocks NCAA DivisionII career win over a ranked team!! The win will always be a place in history and I am glad I was part of something so awesome! Keith Steffeck led the Peacocks with 17 points and not far behind was the Junior, Matt Leasan pitching in 15 points.

Once the Peacocks are finished with their game with Augustana they will get on the bus and head down south to Wayne State, NE. The peacocks have had trouble in the past with beating Wayne on their home court but this trip they are going to change things and make it a very impressive road win. They will play Wayne on Saturday night at 6:00 pm. So when the whole trip is over the peacocks will be traveling an estimated 800 miles for some much needed wins and then with the big wins it should move the Peacocks up in the rankings and keep their tournament hopes alive.

Good luck Men’s Basketball

Your Upper Iowa Men's Basketball team was ranked #10 in the region which has been one of the higher rankings that Upper Iowa has seen in awhile. They hosted the Winona State Warriors who were ranked #9 in the region last Saturday Night in Dorman Gymnasium. The game was a great battle in the first half and the visitors were not scoring at will which played into the Peacocks hands or you could say claws.  At halftime it was a close game with the Warriors only leading by nine points. The head coach for the Peacocks tried to spark the guys during intermission but was vastly forgotten. The Warriors went on a scoring rampage as the second half started. Leading a 19 to 2 run that gave the Warriors a nice cushion for the rest of the game. The peacocks could not answer all the scoring that the Warriors put up and the final score was the Warriors 88 and Peacocks 56.  The peacocks tried to shut down the hot shooting Senior from Hayfield, MN by the name of David Johnson. He ended the night with 25 points and shot 11 for 12 from the charity stripe. The peacocks will not forget about this game and still have a chance to split the series with the Warriors as they travel to Winona, MN on February 25.

The Peacocks will host Mary University on Friday Night February 5 and then the fallowing night they will host Northern State University. Both games will start at 8:00 pm. Come out and support your team as they continue to fight for a spot in the rankings for the region!

Winning takes talent, to repeat takes character.

What’s Behind the Smile?

My name is Domingo Kingsley and I am a sophomore here at Upper Iowa University. My home town is straight north of Fayette called Harmony, MN. I am majoring in Sports Communications and still deciding if I want to have a minor in History. The last year and a half has been quite an experience with the whole atmosphere at Upper Iowa.

As soon as I came to Upper Iowa University I knew that I wanted to get involved right away so I joined the Men’s Basketball team. I am currently working as a Student Assistant and getting to travel with the team to all the games. We travel to the middle of North Dakota and all the way up to Bemidji, MN. I have seen thousands of miles and it has been an awesome experience that I can look back and think it only happened because I went to Upper Iowa.

I have also taken the position as an RA in Garbee Hall on the first floor. It has been both fun and stressful at times but overall it has taught me a lot about responsibility and keeping my life organized. Along with being an RA I wanted to get even more involved with the University so I applied for being a Student Ambassador and was accepted. A student Ambassador is someone that shows visiting students the campus and holds a lot of information about it. Our main goal is to connect with the visitors and let them see what all the University has to offer.

This is a little bit behind the smile of Domingo Kingsley and I hope to share a lot of information with my fellow class mates and future class mates!

Nobody can go back and start a new beginning, but anyone can start today and make a new ending.
